The Indian Council of Philosophical Research was set up by the Ministry of Education in 1977, on the recommendation of a committee that saw the need for a body like the ICSSR and ICHR devoted to philosophy alone. It began work in 1981 under its founder Chairman, Professor D.P. Chattopadhyaya.
From Darshan Bhawan in New Delhi and its Academic Centre in Lucknow, the Council funds fellowships and projects, helps universities hold seminars and lectures, publishes books and the Journal of Indian Council of Philosophical Research, and keeps a specialised library for philosophy.
